Director of Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD) from 1993 to date.
A journalist by training, he is a researcher, photographer, and adjunct faculty of Dept. of Media and Communication, Independent University, Bangladesh. He has been awarded three fellowships: (i) Ashoka: Innovators for the Public (1990-1994) (ii) Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship (1993) (iii) Yale World Fellowship for his innovative works in Bangladesh.
His investigative reports made significant contribution in having Asian Development (ADB) and World Bank in Changing their policies in the areas of plantation projects, prawn aquaculture particularly in the mangrove areas, Phulbari Open Pit mining [that remains suspended since 1996], among others.
His works (around 60 books and documentary films) particularly on environment, indigenous peoples, tea workers and other excluded communities are widely quoted and used by the media, academics, universities, students, and professionals.
